Cretan Diet

cretan dietAs the name would suggest, the Cretan diet book is based upon a study from Crete which took place between 1958 and 1970. It may not be common knowledge but the Cretan diet is actually the basis for the Mediterranean diet which many people believe to be one of the healthiest in the world. There are a number of reasons why this particular diet is proving very popular but the main ones are the fact that it attracts a very low rate of heart disease, has only a moderate intake of fat and many people have lived to a ripe old age.

Healthy oils

Over the years many have become accustomed to the benefits of olive oil although many people may not exactly know why it is so beneficial. It is the monounsaturated fatty acids and antioxidants which make the difference and which have literally changed the life and times of many people. The Mediterranean is an area of the world which is very well respected in the diet industry and it is the use of oils such as olive oil which seems to have tipped the balance.

Fresh food

One of the other components of the Cretan diet is the fact that the vast majority of food is unprocessed and fresh from the area. There is no doubt that processed food does carry its fair share of potential problems for individuals around the world although unfortunately fresh food is not always available to hand. However, we have seen a major movement towards fresh fruit and fresh vegetables over the last decade as their benefits, set against fast food and unhealthy diets, come to the fore yet again.

Some of the vital components of the Cretan diet

There are many areas to look at with regards to the Cretan diet book although the main ones include: –

Olive oil
Herbs and greens
Vegetable orientated dishes
Beans and lentils
Fresh fish
Fresh salad
Fruit and vegetables

It will become plainly obvious that the vast majority of these foods are very fresh, unprocessed and contain an array of minerals and vitamins which we need. In this day and age it is very easy for us to forget about healthy diets and literally eat on the move even though in the back of our minds we know this is unhealthy. An unhealthy diet can come back to haunt you and cause major health issues in later years.

Being realistic

While the vast majority of us would like to no more than to be able to pick our own oranges, grow our own vegetables and basically live off the land the reality is very different. Therefore when looking to undertake the Cretan diet you will need to be sensible and appreciate that you cannot eat fresh fruit, fresh vegetables and the other major elements each and every day without mixing some of the more modern day food offerings.


There has long been a fascination with the Mediterranean diet and indeed the Cretan diet is based around a group of men who lived in Crete. It very quickly became obvious that due to their “healthy” diet we saw low rates of heart disease, less fat intake than traditional diets and indeed many of them lived to a ripe old age.
